Sunday the 1st of July officially marked the beginning of Plastic Free July, and we’re hoping to make a difference!
If you’ve been in store over the past month you may have seen, and indeed been a part of, our little in-store experiment. Single-use plastic bags are a large part of plastic waste; they don’t fully break down, and eventually they end up in our waterways, and our landfills.
At 101, we reuse, and recycle, up to 10 different lines, including soft plastic, cardboard, polystyrene, rubber bands, and paper clips. Now we are trying to reduce the number of single-use plastic bags that we use in store.
When we started our little experiment, it was simply a way to start a conversation about the negative impact of single-use plastic. We also wanted to see if we could make a little bit of a difference to the amount of plastic waste being produced. As you can see, it’s proven to be successful so far! In just one month (and that’s not including the days we were closed), we have saved over 295 plastic bags! Each tally represents a customer who said no to using a plastic bag, either because they simply didn’t want one, or they had brought their own reusable bag.
The response has been amazing! Most of our customers refused a plastic bag, and a lot of them said they refused because they wanted to join the wall!
With the local supermarkets turning away from plastic bags, the issue has gained more traction, and the conversation is becoming a more common one. We’re proud to take part in that conversation! And so are these guys…
Honeywraps
“Goodbye Plastic, Hello Honeywrap!”
Now seems like as good a time as any to shout out another amazing product that’s doing it’s bit for the environment. Plastic wraps are another single-use plastic product that can end up in our oceans, and landfills. Plastic wraps are used in abundance in a lot of households, and the Honeywrap is a natural, reusable way to replace plastic wrap and reduce plastic waste.
Honeywraps use organic cotton, beeswax, tree resin, and jojoba oil. The organic cotton is made without pesticides, making it better for the environment, and our food. Beeswax is not only a byproduct of honey production, but it is naturally anti-bacterial, and has an indefinite shelf life. Tree resin and jojoba oil are also natural, anti-bacterial ingredients that help keep your food fresher for longer. They come in many different sizes, and are useful for wrapping lunches, cheeses, and covering dishes. They’re easy to use, and a great way to reduce your plastic footprint!
Grab a Honeywrap, refuse a plastic bag, and take part in Plastic-Free July!
